The TMS is premised on the strategic goals of the Kingdom/ministry/university with regard to the job market (market-compatible profile outputs). The kingdom has recently shifted focus onto valuing the country’s cultural assets, including tangible and intangible cultural heritage, museums, and archives.

The TMS programme aims at :

  • Developing students’ knowledge in the disciplines of Cultural Studies and Memory Studies.
  • Equipping students with theoretical and conceptual frameworks in Cultural and Memory studies.
  • Familiarizing students with different cultural concepts : race, ethnicity, class, identity, etc.
  • Enabling students of linking theory, analysis, and practice in research.
  • Qualifying students for research into Morocco’s (and beyond) cultural tangible and intangible heritage from the perspective of cultural and memory studies.
  • Providing students with skills and competencies to deal with (cross)cultural problems in research.
  • Enabling students of critical, analytical, and constructive modes of thinking when dealing with multicultural contexts.
  • Encouraging students to discuss/tackle/debate on comparative/competitive identities and memories, especially with regard to the public sphere.
  • Assisting students into communication modes with different stakeholders/actors/bodies involved in cultural sustenance of patrimony and memory.
  • Re-thinking the links between different identities and memories (Blacks, Jews, Muslims, Amazigh, etc.) across Morocco’s multicultural spectrum.

TMS programme envisages a variety of skills. Students will be able to:

  • Acquire theoretical, conceptual, and methodological tools of research.
  • Solve (cross)Cultural problems with regard to different cultural aspects (different identities and memories).
  • Analytically, critically, and constructively think, examine, and debate cultural phenomena.
  • Use memory studies as a conceptual framework of research and analysis.
  • Scientifically and objectively engage in and debate different identities and memories and their power dynamics in the public sphere.
  • Scientifically and objectively collect, conceptualize, and analyse research data.
  • Dig into cultural archives and bring interesting ideas/project into memory.
  • Participate in the valuation and reconstruction of cultural heritage in connection with different interlocuters in the field.
  • Engage in in-depth research of memory (individual, collective, cultural, transgenerational, etc.).
  • Study links between Morocco’s different memories/identities (sub-Sahara (Black); Jewish, Amazigh, etc.)
  • Be able to place Moroccan memoirs, autobiographies, diaries, etc. into global fame and recognition (translation/transcription).
